The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has now opened public consultation on a proposal to declare second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) to be restricted chemical products. A discussion paper and survey is available on the department’s consultation website. The department has invited stakeholders to share their views on the proposal and the issues raised in the discussion paper.
SGARs can pose secondary poisoning risks to non-target species, particularly native birds and animals. The APVMA has recommended restricting access and use of SGARs to authorised users to manage these risks.
This applies to products containing:
- brodifacoum
- bromadiolone
- difenacoum
- difethialone
- flocoumafen.
If declared as RCPs, these rodenticides would only be available to people authorised under legislation in each state and territory.
Consultation closes 11 June 2026.
