Background

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is seeking feedback on its Trade Advice Notice on products containing antimicrobials for growth promotion in cattle and sheep destined for European markets.

This Trade Advice Notice has been developed to address the European Union decision to ban the import of edible animal products derived from animals fed antimicrobial compounds for the purpose of growth promotion from September 2026. It includes proposed amendments to labels of products containing the antimicrobials flavophospholipol, monensin, lasalocid, narasin and salinomycin and affects use patterns in sheep and dairy and beef cattle.

We invite submissions from 10 December 2024 to 31 January 2025 on the Trade Advice Notice.

Please note: submissions will be published on the APVMA’s website, unless you have asked for the submission to remain confidential, or if the APVMA chooses at its discretion not to publish any submissions received (refer to the public consultation coversheet).

Please lodge your submission using the public consultation coversheet, which provides options for how your submission will be published.

Submissions received

The APVMA sought comment from interested stakeholders in relation to the Trade Advice Notice on products containing antimicrobials for growth promotion in cattle and sheep destined for European markets. The consultation closed on 31 January 2025.

Ten submissions were received from stakeholders during the consultation period. Six submissions were made by industry representative associations, 2 by animal welfare organisations, and 2 by commercial organisations.

The APVMA received permission to publish the contents of 8 of the submissions. The remaining submissions have been considered but are not published.

Consultation feedback

A summary of the APVMA’s consideration of the submissions is available on apvma.gov.au.

The information received during the consultation period did not change the APVMA’s assessment that the ongoing use of antimicrobials for growth promotion in cattle and sheep destined for European markets will pose a risk to trade.

The APVMA has now completed its assessment of the risk to trade from the use of antimicrobial products for growth promotion in cattle and sheep and will commence action to mitigate the identified risk.
