Changes to herbicide Labels

Labels for some herbicide products require updating to reflect changes to mode of action groupings introduced in February 2008.

The correct mode of action and associated resistance management statements must appear on all affected herbicide product labels before 28 February 2011.

The new mode of action groupings and associated Herbicide Resistance Management Strategies appear on the CropLife Australia website and will be incorporated into the Ag Labelling Code as soon as practicable.

The mode of action letter and specified resistance management statements on registered herbicide product labels can be updated under APVMA Permit PER6868 without a specific application to the APVMA, provided they meet the conditions as set out in the said permit document.

Permit number 6868 is a permit for supplying a registered chemical product with a label, which is not identical to the approved label. Under this permit label approval holders do not need to make an application to the APVMA to vary the approved label where the variations are within the conditions of this permit.  Part A, Formatting changes No. 18 allows for “Mandatory changes to pesticide mode of action group letters or numerals and pesticide resistance management statements for resistance management strategies, that are in accordance with the Agricultural Labelling Code.” Use the Permits Database to access PER6868.

For further information on changes to mode of action groups email or call the pesticides contact officer (02) 62104748.

Why have some herbicide mode of action groups been changed?

Changes to some groupings of herbicide modes of action have arisen from a recent CropLife Australia initiative to review the herbicide mode of action grouping system.  The APVMA supports these changes as they align the Australian herbicide mode of action grouping system more closely with the international system and improve the accuracy and completeness of the system. With the addition and regrouping of a number of herbicide products, there are now six new herbicide mode of action groups. However, for most herbicides, the mode of action group remains unchanged.

What label changes are necessary?

The Herbicide Mode of Action Groups table lists the approved active constituents in each group and the trade name of the first registered product or successor.  The preamble of the newHerbicide Resistance Management Strategies lists the active constituents and products that have changed mode of action group and will therefore require label amendments.
