This report updates Australia's position on the human safety of residues of hormone growth promotants (HGPs) used in cattle. The report was commissioned by the APVMA and written by the Office of the Chemical Safety (OCS) in the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The
report evaluates a number of scientific papers published in international
journals, to assess whether there are harmful residues of HGPs in beef.
A review of the data does not indicate any grounds for amending Australia's
regulatory position with respect to HGPs, ie there is unlikely to be
any appreciable health risk to consumers from eating meat from cattle
that have been treated with HGPs according to Good Veterinary Practice.
