Update

  • October 2013—The APVMA has suspended the registration of the product Southern Cross Gold OP Spray-on Off-Shears Sheep Lice Treatment (APVMA Approval Number 66051) and its associated label approval. For further information, refer to page 14 of Gazette No. 21 - 22 October 2013 (PDF, 636kb) | (RTF, 777kb).

In December 1996 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a review of diazinon because of concerns over the potential for diazinon to form highly toxic breakdown products and its potential to pose a risk to public health, occupational health and safety, the environment, animals, and Australia’s trade.

In April 2003 the APVMA released the Diazinon Review Findings Report Part 1 (PDF, 113kb). The APVMA found that emulsifiable concentrate (EC) products without stabiliser posed an undue hazard to the safety of people and animals as these products could break down to produce highly toxic impurities. The APVMA also found that products used on companion animals posed an undue hazard to the environment, particularly in the urban environment where use could result in contamination of urban run-off. The APVMA cancelled EC products without stabilizer and a small number of companion animal products containing diazinon.

In June 2006 the APVMA released the Diazinon Preliminary Findings Review Report (PRF) Part 2 (PDF, 879kb). The APVMA extended the review of diazinon based on new information and the preliminary findings of Part 2 are supplementary to earlier findings. The APVMA concluded that the risks associated with several uses and application methods for diazinon posed an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment.

In May 2007, the APVMA suspended the use of diazinon for sheep dipping and jetting. The decision followed consideration of submissions to the 2006 PRF. Amongst other recommendations, the PRF proposed the discontinuation of uses of diazinon products for sheep dipping and jetting because of evidence showing these practices may have unacceptable impacts on the occupational health and safety (OH&S) of workers.

The APVMA has been considering additional information submitted for the review of diazinon. In doing so, the APVMA has been consolidating and updating, where necessary, assessments undertaken since the review commenced.

As a result, the APVMA has released the toxicology (hazard) component of diazinon, the Diazinon Consolidated Human Health Risk Assessment (PDF, 2.67kb). The December 2011 report is a consolidation of toxicological hazard assessments undertaken since the review of diazinon commenced.

In March 2012 the APVMA extended the scope of the diazinon review to include the registration of the product Eureka Gold OP Spray-on Off-Shears Sheep Lice Treatment (APVMA Approval Number 51290) and its associated label approvals. Then in September 2012, the APVMA extended the scope of the diazinon review to include the newly registered product Southern Cross Gold OP Spray-on Off-shears Sheep Lice Treatment (APVMA Number 66051).

The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed. Read a full history of the review.
