Eighty chemicals banned in Europe in use here?

On 24 May 2011, the media reported claims from an activist group (external site) that Australia currently has over 80 agricultural and veterinary chemicals in use that are banned in Europe.
The APVMA is unaware of the basis of this claim but notes that in August 2010 a WWF Australia commissioned report made a similar statement. At that time the APVMA reviewed the report and found, firstly, that it misrepresented the outcome of a recent European Union review and, secondly, that a quarter of the chemicals were currently in use in Europe.
