APVMA monitoring herbicide spray event in western Sydney
14 April 2010. 1:06pm
The APVMA understands that a man in western Sydney has died today and a number of other people were hospitalised (external site) after an event described as exposure to a herbicide spray.
Details about the event are sketchy. Whereas it was originally reported that the use of a herbicide may have caused the fatality, no current information confirms herbicide ingestion as the cause of death.
Investigations carried out by state authorities will, in due course, determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
The APVMA will consider any findings from such inquiries.
Updated 1:45pm
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported a statement from the man's brother expressing a view that he believed the herbicide spray was unlikely to be the cause of death. The three people that tried to resuscitate the man have also since been released from hospital.
