Diazinon Stakeholder Consultation Continues

The APVMA will participate in the roundtable of wool and sheepmeat industry stakeholders to discuss the future of the insecticide diazinon. The roundtable, announced on Friday19 January by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Peter McGauran, will provide another opportunity to build on the APVMA's already extensive consultation with stakeholders on this issue.
Industry-funded research in 2004 showed that diazinon, an important chemical used for lice control in sheep, causes adverse human health impacts on rural workers who have contact with the chemical.
On the basis of this finding the APVMA has proposed that the use of diazinon for dipping and jetting sheep using current methods would be discontinued. However, the APVMA supports further work to see whether new technologies such as cage-dipping can allow diazinon to be used safely.
