Regulatory Update #146

15 March 2012 - 29 March 2012

Diuron announcement 27 March 2012: suspension to continue pending final decision

Diuron is used to control broadleaf and grass weeds in agriculture, and weeds and algae in and around water bodies. The APVMA has extended the suspension of certain diuron registered products until 30 November 2012. The APVMA has also finalised its review of diuron for a number of products that are not subject to further outcomes of the environmental assessment.

APVMA staff go out in the field March 26-27

As part of regular staff training and as an opportunity for further outreach on the communications and consultation policy currently being developed, APVMA staff spent two days immersed in the Narrabri-Wee Waa cotton industry on March 26-27. Activities included a visit to a cotton farm, seed developer, chemical supplier, airport for discussions with the aerial spraying industry, a cotton gin and research station. A seminar drawing all elements of the cotton industry closed the tour. Discussion at the seminar ranged over the role of the APVMA, regulation, communications with stakeholders, a new test for chemical contamination and research.

APVMA science fellow to warn on herbicide resistance at American summits

APVMA science fellow Professor Stephen Powles is warning farmers to be more aware of how valuable herbicides are for our farms and to use different herbicides in rotation, along with other non-chemical tools. Professor Powles is keen to get the message out that over-reliance on one herbicide can cause weeds to evolve resistance to that herbicide and that’s the message he’ll be taking to a US national summit on herbicide resistance (external site) to be held in Washington DC on 10 May 2012 and then to a similar event in South America from 16-18 May 2012.
