Is a pigeon paramyxovirus vaccine available in Australia?

In late 2011, an outbreak of disease due to paramyxovirus type1 (PPVM1), which had not previously been reported in Australia, occurred in a number of pigeon flocks in Victoria. Further outbreaks occurred in Western Sydney, NSW, in May–July 2012. Affected pigeon flocks experienced high mortality associated with lethargy, gastrointestinal and neurological signs.
A vaccine against PPVM1 is available overseas but it is illegal to import the vaccine into Australia or to obtain or use it in Australia. There is no registered vaccine specific for pigeon PPVM1 available in Australia. Information on other vaccines available in Australia is on the websites listed below.
Pigeon owners should consult their veterinarian or state agriculture department for more information about vaccination or other biosecurity measures.
