Part 9 - Other Trade Aspects

1.   INTRODUCTION

Other Trade Aspects concern trade issues which are not directly related to residues in food commodities.

1.1.   Examples of non-food trade issues

Examples of non-food trade issues include:

Residues in fibre/wool

If a new chemical product may affect fibre/wool quality, this may have the potential to affect Australia's trade in this commodity.

Presence of disease or seropositive testing to exotic or notifiable diseases

Use of veterinary immunobiological products may pose risks to Australian trade due to concerns of importing countries with exotic or notifiable animal diseases associated with live active constituents or extraneous agents.

Certain immunobiological products may also affect an animal’s immune response to tests for exotic or notifiable diseases. These tests may be required for export of animals to certain countries.

The use of such products has the potential to affect Australia's animal trade with certain countries.

Endocrine and related substances

Use in farm animals of some hormonal growth promotants, or substances with a thyrostatic action, or beta-agonists, has the potential to affect Australia's trade in animal commodities with certain countries. Hormonal growth promotants of concern include oestradiol-17, testosterone, progesterone, zeranol, trenbolone acetate and melengestrol acetate.

Genetically modified produce

If a new chemical product contains a genetically-modified organism, or one or more of its constituents have been produced by a genetically-modified organism, the use of this product may have the potential to affect Australia's trade with certain countries.

1.2.   Data requirements

The APVMA considers potential effects on trade described when assessing products for registration. Applicants should consult the Veterinary Medicines Program to discuss what data to submit for a particular commodity.
