How we conduct public consultations
The APVMA seeks input from interested stakeholders throughout the chemical registration and review processes as well as during the development of program reforms.
Consultation arrangements
All issues for public consultation are published on our Public Consultation page.
Members of the public can submit comments to the APVMA in writing via email, letter or fax.
Details of to whom the public can submit comment is published in each invitation for public comment on the Public Consultation page.
The receipt of submissions is acknowledged via email or letter within 10 working days of receipt by the APVMA.
Submitters should include a contact name and postal or email address as a minimum to allow the APVMA to acknowledge comment received.

New products and active constituents
When the APVMA proposes to:
- approve a new active constituent
- register a new chemical product with a new active constituent, or
- change the use of an existing registered product, where the change has the potential to affect Australia’s trade
public consultation occurs before a final decision is made.
New active constituents
The APVMA invites public comment on proposals to approve new active constituents by publishing a notice on the website and in the APVMA Gazette. The consultation opportunity is communicated through the Gazette and Regulatory Update emails to subscribers.
- Consultation period: minimum of 28 days from the Gazette notice.
New products with new active constituents
The APVMA invites public comment on proposals to register a new product with a new active constituent by publishing a Public Release Summary on the website and a notice in the APVMA Gazette. The consultation opportunity is communicated through the Gazette and Regulatory Update emails to subscribers.
- Consultation period: minimum of 28 days from the Gazette notice.
Changes to the use of an existing product, affecting trade
The APVMA invites public comment on proposals to vary the use of an existing registered product, where the change has the potential to affect Australia’s trade by publishing a Trade Advice Notice on the website. The consultation opportunity is communicated through correspondence to relevant stakeholders and Regulatory Update emails to subscribers.
- Consultation period: minimum of 28 days from communication to relevant stakeholders
Reviews of existing registered chemicals
The Chemical Review Program consults widely with stakeholders throughout the review process. When a review is announced, the APVMA invites the public, chemical users and any interested parties to make submissions on any aspect of the chemical including performance, use practices and any adverse effects. There is also a public consultation period when the draft review report is released for comment. This takes place before the APVMA makes a final decision. There is consultation throughout the review process with various groups on more specific issues, for example the data required to maintain a particular use pattern. The release of all review reports is widely advertised through media releases, APVMA Gazette notices, this website and by direct mail.
Other public consultations
The design, publication and communication of other public consultation opportunities is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the significance of the issue.
Publication of Decisions
The APVMA Gazette lists all APVMA notices and decisions including registration, reviews and changes to registration status that the Agvet Code requires.
