Tribufos

Tribufos (S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate) is an organophosphorus compound formerly used in New South Wales and Queensland as a cotton defoliant. It was applied to the cotton as a spray, either by air or ground rig.

There are currently no products containing tribufos registered for use in Australia. Tribufos has not been sold in Australia as a cotton defoliant since 1990.

Tribufos review

Status: review completed

The APVMA (formerly the NRA) reviewed the use of tribufos because of concerns over inadequate toxicological information and possible occupational health and safety risks to the public and workers from short and long-term exposure.

In February 1998 the APVMA released the Tribufos Special Review Report. In the report the APVMA recommended cancelling the registration of all products containing tribufos and withdrawing all Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). Read a full history of the review...
