Temephos (O,O,O′,O′-tetramethyl O,O′-thiodi-p-phenylene diphosphorothioate) is a non-systemic organophosphorus (OP) veterinary insecticide and acaricide used to control ectoparasiticides on food producing and domestic animals.
Status: review in progress
In May 1995 temephos was nominated for review as part of the Existing Chemicals Review Program (ECRP) which was established to systematically review a number of Agvet chemicals which have been on the Australian market for some time. Temephos was nominated for the ECRP because of concerns over occupational health and safety, toxicity and its potential risk to the environment.
In February 2000 the NRA Expert Panel on Organophosphate Sheep Dips (the Panel) reviewed the findings of the UK Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) report, Epidemiological study of the relationship between exposure to organophosphate pesticides and indices of chronic peripheral neuropathy, and neuropsychological abnormalities in sheep farmers and dippers (July 1999). The Panel found that work practices and exposure risks differed between Australia and the UK. However, the panel could not completely rule out a link between OP exposure and long-term effects. The panel recommended reducing worker exposure to OPs and that the APVMA (formerly the NRA) review the uses of OPs on sheep.
In 2006 the APVMA began a review of temephos based on the findings and recommendations of the Panel. This review of temephos is limited to the use of sheep products containing temephos and involves only one marketed product, Coopers assassin sheep dip (registered to Schering-Plough Pty Limited). This review is separate from, but related to, the reviews of selected sheep ectoparasiticides. While the review of temephos is being conducted separately, the outcomes of this review maybe taken into consideration by related reviews.
Following the assessment of temephos the APVMA will release a preliminary findings review report outlining the proposed regulatory arrangements for its future use on sheep. There will be a public consultation period providing all members of the community with an opportunity to comment on this report before it is finalised.
The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
