In January 1994 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a Special Review of Phenothiazine to consolidate previous regulatory action by the Australian Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Council (AAVCC). The AAVCC had recommended withdrawing the clearance of phenothiazine, the active ingredient in Olsson’s Wormolas Block, CCD Formula 18 and Clifton’s Kill-Worm, because of concerns over the lack of toxicological and residues data on which Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) could be established.
The APVMA made multiple requests for more information from the registrants. The registrants did not provide the required information but voluntarily requested that the APVMA cancel the registration of their respective products.
The APVMA completed the Special Review of Phenothiazine in 30 October 1996 but did not publish a final report due to the small number of registrants involved. In the report the APVMA recommended cancelling the registrations of phenothiazine products (Olsson’s Wormolas Block, CCD Formula 18 and Clifton’s Kill-Worm) effective from 31 December 1996.
There is no Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) for phenothiazine in food commodities.
