In 1996 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a review of parathion (the name commonly used for parathion ethyl) because of concerns about its high mammalian toxicity, occupational exposure concerns and potential for adverse environmental impacts.
In September 1998 the Draft Report of Parathion* was released for public comment. The draft report identified concerns over the lack of environmental and occupational exposure data and requested that registrants and industry bodies provide further data to support the continued use of parathion ethyl.
The draft report proposed a restricted use regime for products containing parathion until all the requested data was generated.
In May 1999, the APVMA requested further information from stakeholders (producer and user industry groups, chemical registrants and states/territories) to show that the continued use of parathion would not pose an undue hazard to workers, the environment or trade. The advice received by the APVMA was that they were unwilling to provide this data.
In February 2000 the APVMA released the Final Review Report of Parathion. The APVMA was not satisfied that the continued use of parathion products would not pose an undue hazard to humans, the environment, nor unduly prejudice Australian trade.
The APVMA was also not satisfied that the conditions of registration and approvals for parathion products could be varied to meet the current requirements for continued registration.
In the final review the APVMA recommended:
The APVMA’s concerns with parathion ethyl remain and it will not consider the registration of any product containing parathion ethyl unless all the concerns identified in the review are fully addressed.
