Parathion ethyl

Parathion ethyl is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus non-systemic insecticide and acaricide formerly used in Australia to control a variety of insects, including larvae, aphids and moths in horticultural and agricultural crops.

Parathion ethyl has been listed as a chemical subject to the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade (the Rotterdam Convention). Australia became a party to the convention on 18 August 2004.

Prior Informed Consent (PIC) is a procedure that promotes a shared responsibility between exporting and importing countries in protecting human health and the environment from the potentially harmful effects of certain hazardous chemicals that are being traded internationally. It allows countries to make informed decisions about the chemicals they import and contributes to the processes of managing chemical risk.

Parathion ethyl review

Status: Review Completed

The APVMA began the review of parathion ethyl because of concerns about its high mammalian toxicity, occupational exposure concerns and potential for adverse environmental impacts.

In February 2000 the APVMA released the Final Review Report of Parathion Ethyl. The APVMA recommended cancelling the all registrations and relevant approvals for parathion products, cancelling the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for parathion, and cancelling active constituent approval.
