Methidathion (S-2,3-dihydro-5-methoxy-2-oxo-1,3,4-thiadiazol-3-ylmethyl O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate) is a non-systemic organophosphorus (OP) insecticide and acaricide used to control a variety of horticultural and agricultural pests.
Status: review in progress
In May 1995 methidathion was nominated for review as part of the Existing Chemicals Review Program (ECRP) which was established to systematically review a number of Agvet chemicals which have been on the Australian market for some time. Methiocarb was nominated because of human health and toxicological concerns. This action was based on advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) that methidathion may pose a potential hazard to public health and should be re-evaluated using contemporary data and assessment standards.
In May 2002 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a review of methidathion which focused on the assessment of the toxicology of methidathion. In June 2002 the APVMA released the Methidathion Review Scope Document which included a request for registrants of products containing methidathion to provide a list of all relevant toxicological studies held by them.
In October 2005 the APVMA board agreed to extend the scope of the review to include worker safety, residue and dietary risk concerns.
Following the assessment of methidathion the APVMA will release a preliminary review findings report outlining the proposed regulatory arrangements for the future use of methidathion. There will be a public consultation period providing all members of the community with an opportunity to comment on this report before it is finalised.
The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
