Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, non-selective, post-emergence herbicide effective on annual and perennial plants.
Glyphosate comes in two forms, the free acid and various salts (isopropylamine, trimesium, diphenylamine and mono-ammonium). The isopropylamine salt of glyphosate is the most commonly used form.
Status: review completed
The APVMA began the review of glyphosate because of concerns about the potential risk to aquatic environments from the use of products containing glyphosate.
In June 1996 the APVMA released the Glyphosate Review Final Report. In the report the APVMA found that the aquatic toxicity of the glyphosate products was undesirably high and was mainly due to the surfactants in the formulations. To reduce the potential for aquatic toxicity the APVMA increased the environmental safety margin for glyphosate products by amending product use patterns and labels.
