Fipronil is a broad-spectrum phenyl pyrazole insecticide acting on the nervous system of insects by contact or ingestion. It is used in veterinary products to control fleas, lice and ticks. In agriculture it is used as a seed dressing and for the control of grasshoppers, locusts and a wide range of other insect pests in pasture, crops and turf.
Fipronil is also used in a number of household products and commercial building treatments such as cockroach baits and gels, and in ant bait stations.
Status: review in progress
Fipronil was nominated for review following a number of reports of adverse experiences involving the use of products containing fipronil. These reports included skin reactions in animals and humans, and neurological effects and death in some target animals (often involving concurrent infestations with paralysis ticks). The use of fipronil was also involved in the deaths of domesticated rabbits following off-label use.
In September 2003 the APVMA began a review of fipronil which considered concerns over toxicity, primarily related to skin irritation and induction of skin sensitisation, but also the potential of fipronil to form toxic photodegradation products, occupational health and safety issues, animal safety and the adequacy of label instructions.
Following the assessment of fipronil the APVMA will release a preliminary findings review report outlining the proposed regulatory arrangements for the future use of fipronil. There will be a public consultation period providing all members of the community with an opportunity to comment on this report before it is finalised.
The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
