Diuron [(1,1-dimethyl, 3-(3’,4’-dichlorophenyl) urea)] is a broad-spectrum residual herbicide and algaecide used for pre and post-emergent control of both broadleaf and grass weeds in agriculture. It is also used to control weeds and algae in and around water bodies and is a component of marine antifouling paints.
Status: review in progress
In 2002 the APVMA began a review of diuron because of concerns that diuron from agricultural use, particularly in sugar cane, could cause damage to marine environments such as the Great Barrier Reef. There were also concerns about the toxicity of the impurities in the diuron active constituent.
In 2005 the APVMA released the Diuron Preliminary Review Findings Report. The APVMA’s preliminary findings were that the toxic impurities in the active constituent diuron did not pose a risk to human heath. However, diuron in water and soil run-off did pose a risk to the environment.
To minimise the risk to the environment the APVMA proposed measures to reduce the annual amount of diuron used, introducing buffer zones and removing the use of diuron in irrigation channels and drainage ditches. Read a full history of the review...
The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
