The APVMA has announced it will cancel registrations for dimetridazole for use on pigs and poultry where the end product is intended for human consumption.
The decision is based on a review of the chemical which identifies dimetridazole as a potential genotoxic carcinogen. The review concludes that using the chemical in food producing species causes undue risk to public health as well as to the safety of workers and end users.
The APVMA proposes a two-year phase out period and has determined it will allow existing batches of affected products to be used during this period under revised instructions.
