Status: review in progress
In December 1996 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a review of diazinon because of concerns over the potential for diazinon to form highly toxic breakdown products and its potential to pose a risk to public health, occupational health and safety, the environment, animals, and Australia’s trade.
In April 2003 the APVMA released the Diazinon Review Findings Report Part 1. The APVMA found that emulsifiable concentrates (EC) products without stabiliser posed an undue hazard to the safety of people and animals as these products could break down to produce highly toxic impurities. The APVMA also found that products used on companion animals posed an undue hazard to the environment, particularly in the urban environment where use could result in contamination of urban run-off. The APVMA cancelled products that were hydrocarbon (water) based formulations and a small number of companion animal products containing diazinon.
In June 2006 the APVMA released the Diazinon Preliminary Findings Review Report (PRF) Part 2. The APVMA extended the review of diazinon based on new information and the preliminary findings of Part 2 are supplementary to earlier findings. The APVMA concluded that the risks associated with several uses and application methods for diazinon posed an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment.
To minimise the possible dietary risks to humans, the APVMA proposed establishing new Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for some crops, including strengthening safety directions and warning statements on diazinon product labels, and deleting uses and application methods of diazinon which were assessed as posing possible human health risks. The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
