Coumaphos is an organophosphorus insecticide and acaricide used for the control of ticks, lice and fleas in cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and dogs.
In 2002 the APVMA received an adverse experience report (AERP) concerning the use of a coumaphos based product in a domestic setting.
The APVMA investigated the report and found that the product concerned, Bay-O-Pet Asuntol Dog and Horse Rinse containing 50 g/L coumaphos, had been used in a manner contrary to label directions (i.e. off-label use). However, a key issue which emerged from the investigation was the overall lack of toxicological and exposure data regarding domestic use on companion animals of 50 g/L coumaphos products.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA; within the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing) advised the APVMA and the registrant that coumaphos-based products were unsuitable for home veterinary use and recommended against their registration.
The APVMA requested more information from the registrant to show that the product would not be an undue risk to human health. The registrant did not provide this information but voluntarily requested that the APVMA cancel the registration of the product.
The APVMA cancelled the registration of Bay-O-Pet Asuntol Dog and Horse Rinse in June 2004.
This was the only coumaphos product on the Australian market at the time of the review. Currently there are no active constituent approvals or MRLs for coumaphos.
