Chlortetracycline

Chlortetracycline is a member of the tetracycline group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs used to treat bacterial infections in animals.

Chlortetracycline is used as a feed and water additive for food-producing animals.

Chlortetracycline review

Status: review completed

The APVMA initially began a review of chlortetracycline use in the pig industry because of toxicological concerns about residues in pork products. The APVMA then expanded the review to consider the use of chlortetracycline in all food-producing animals and in milk.

In 1999 the APVMA completed the Chlortetracycline Review Final Report* but did not publish a final report as there were only a small number of registrants involved. In the report the APVMA recommended withdrawing approvals for use in sheep and lactating animals. The APVMA also recommended increasing the withholding periods for some use patterns and establishing MRLs for cattle, poultry, eggs, and pigs. Read a full history of the review...
