Carbaryl

Carbaryl is a carbamate insecticide used to control of pests in home garden and domestic situations, on ornamentals, lawns, fruit and vegetables and around public buildings. It is also used in the control of insects on domestic animals.

The review of carbaryl was split into two parts:

  • Part 1 looked at products that are used in home garden, home veterinary, poultry and domestic situations
  • Part 2 considered products used in agriculture.

Currently only Part 1 of the review has been finalised. A Preliminary Review Findings (PRF) report for Part 2 of the carbaryl review has been released and a final review report will be published after the assessment is completed.

Carbaryl review

In 1995 the APVMA (formerly the NRA) began a review of carbaryl due to concerns that residues in treated cereals may exceed the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) and concern over the lack of MRLs for animals fed on treated cereal products.

The review of carbaryl was extended in 1999 and 2003, based on new information which identified concerns about the risks to people from its use in the home garden and from potential residues in produce.

Carbaryl review—Part 1 Uses of carbaryl in home garden, home veterinary, poultry and domestic situations

Status: review completed

In January 2007 the APVMA released the Carbaryl Final Review Report and Regulatory Decision (Part 1). The APVMA found that there were insufficient data to assess the potential risks and to support the continued use of products containing carbaryl on home garden food crops (fruit and vegetables) and for home veterinary dusting powders.

To reduce the potential health risks, the APVMA recommended removing food uses from the home garden and varying the labels of other products containing carbaryl to prevent such use. Read a full history of the review...

Carbaryl review—Part 2 Uses of carbaryl in agricultural situations

Status: review in progress

In July 2006 the APVMA released the Carbaryl Preliminary Review Findings (PRF) Report (Part 2). The APVMA found that some uses, application methods and formulations of products containing carbaryl posed a potential risk to the safety of people.

The APVMA proposed cancelling some uses and application methods, strengthening engineering controls to protect users, and including stronger safety directions and warning statements on product labels. Read a full history of the review...

The APVMA will issue a final report once the assessment of all available data is completed.
