Implementation of Recommendations from NRA Review of National Permit System

During 2000/2001, the NRA undertook a Review of the National Permit System that operates within the National Registration Scheme. The objective of this review was to:

Develop a New Permit System that provides for the use of agvet chemicals for unapproved uses or for research purposes, to agreed standards of safety and efficacy, and which:

The review process involved consultation with key stakeholder groups including state co-ordinators, various primary production associations as well as representatives from the chemical industry. The review resulted in a total of 24 recommendations that were presented to the NRA Board. The majority of these recommendations have subsequently been ratified by the Board and are currently being further developed and implemented.

The implementation of the review recommendations can be allocated into five main areas:


1. Develop more detailed permit guidelines and requirements (new Permit Manual)
2. Improve the efficiency of the permit process
3. Improve the communication and IT facilities covering permits
4. Increase the number of minor uses on product labels; and
5. Reduce the number of unnecessary or duplicate permits.

Prior to full implementation of new guidelines and other requirements in the Permit Manual, the NRA will gazette these as they are developed. Each gazetted new guideline or requirement will include the date that they come into effect. Guidelines and requirements currently being developed include, but are not limited to:
