STRATEGIC OUTCOMES

New Risk Assessment Dashboard

The Board approved a new Risk Assessment Dashboard to assist its monitoring of treatments for risks identified in the APVMA Risk Management Plan approved at APVMA19. The Risk Dashboard will be periodically updated and tabled at every Board meeting.

Updates on external reviews of the APVMA

The Board was briefed on the progress of the Australian National Audit Office [ANAO] Performance Audit of the APVMA. The ANAO’s final report is due to be tabled in Parliament in October 2006.

The Board also received further updates on the Uhrig review of the APVMA’s corporate governance framework.

Compliance Strategic Reform

Directors endorsed management proposals to further develop, in consultation with stakeholders, approaches to improving the range of compliance and enforcement mechanisms available to the APVMA.

CHEMICAL REVIEWS

Program Managers presented updates on the progress of the following chemical reviews were presented at APVMA20.

Carbaryl Part 2 – Agricultural Uses

The Board noted and approved the release of the Preliminary Review Findings (PRF) for Carbaryl (Part 2: Use in Agricultural Situations) for two months public comment. The PRF and related documentation are available on the APVMA website at apvma.gov.au/chemrev/carbaryl.shtml.

Diazinon

The Board noted and approved the release of the Preliminary Review Findings (PRF) for Diazinon (Part 2) for three months public comment. The PRF and related documentation are available on the APVMA website at apvma.gov.au/chemrev/diazinon.shtml.


Other review matters

Directors also received a further update on proceedings before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal regarding the review of virginiamycin and an outline of submissions received so far following the release of the PRF for 2,4-D (Environment) Part 1: Esters.

OTHER APVMA20 OUTCOMES

Memorandum of Understanding

The Board noted that the APVMA and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to underpin further cooperation between the two agencies.

Minor Use Reform

The Board was advised that recruitment is proceeding for the interim Minor Use Liaison Office as approved at APVMA18.

VMDA Presentation

Mr Neil Sammons, President of the Veterinary Manufacturers and Distributors Association (VMDA) gave a presentation to the Board on issues of particular interest to VMDA.
